Yesterday I had the privilege to visit my Mexican rescue cats Kanu & Tau at the sanctuary here in The Netherlands where they live a happy, roam free life, with all their cat friends.
I’ve missed them both so much! ❤️❤️
Wetland-Cats is taking such good care of them and are giving them the best life they could ever wish for, with heated cabins (for the winter) with beds, toys and scratching poles where they can go in and out at will, medical care, food, even special cuddle volunteers and 20.000m2 to roam around in nature. It is away from any traffic or housing, surrounded by many waterways that The Netherlands is known for. They have the sounds of nature all around them from sheep, roosters and the rustling sounds of the trees that provides shade to the area in summer. Recently they acquired their own medical center at the location itself so that abused and injured animals who are brought in have immediate medical assistance at the sanctuary, instead of veterinarians having to come there or the animals the need to be transported to a clinic for medical procedures. The Sanctuary has a special area for handicapped cats, another for extreme wild cats and then the area for the more social cats, they also rescue horses and donkeys from countries like Romania, Greece and others, they have a special area for them too.
This sanctuary relies solely on donations. Feel free to visit the website to donate for the many animals they rescue and keep there for life. From handicapped, traumatised to abused and wild cats. 🙏🌷
Or get a paid subscription on my substack and the proceeds will go to Wetland-Cats , find them also on their Facebook link here
How it all started!
Both Kanu and Tau came from Mexico and unfortunately had some severe health issues. Tau being deaf and albino and needing special care as she could not smell at all which has been taken care of partially for now, and she is eating well now, where as prior I needed to hand feed her as she could not smell the food and her taste was gone. Kanu is having a chronic pancreas infection. The three of us have been through a rollercoaster to put it mildly.
The costs for their medical interventions were a lot. They both love the outdoors (like they did in Mexico) which I could not provide at my city home in Holland with Tau being deaf, and they were inseparable. So, I had to make the hard decision to give them up. The sanctuary they stay at has a lot of free roaming space in nature without any danger for Tau and they get to have a lot of cat friends and unlimited care. I will miss them always but also know they are safe. They would not have survived in Mexico.
Kanu came from a nest that was found with dead kittens and the mother was gone, Tau came from an extreme wild mother and was taken at 4 weeks old from her. I took it upon myself to adopt them, not knowing what was going to happen after that, which was a lot of stress, moving places in Mexico, having had severe health issues myself there and ongoing at my return home, medical bills for them and not being able to give them that freedom they could get in this sanctuary. I was extremely lucky to find them and that they accepted Kanu and Tau due to the extraordinary circumstances. I’m eternally grateful they gave us a chance ❤️
While finally being on the mend myself after losing a lot of weight and now gaining it again, I now adopt them at a distance and pay monthly for this. Many cats need the help that come in there. It is a busy time with many abused and traumatised cats at the sanctuary. They take many of them in and will have a place there for the rest of their lives so they never have to suffer again. They come from many different countries.
Kittens are being adopted and get a new home, most other cats won’t, due to trauma or special needs. Please consider donating to them for the amazing work they do with many volunteers.
